The Shakespeare Seat Box made from Plastic - Perfect for Beginners

The Shakespeare brand has been supplying seat boxes for many many years, and this extra durable polypropylene (plastic) seat box is a great beginner box for parking your backside whilst relaxing the bank.

This beginner seat box is available in either black or blue.  Personally, I much prefer the black Shakespeare seat boxes over the blue, but either will be great for the starter fisher person.

The size is fairly standard for a seat box and should be more than enough for bait / tackle / rigs:

  • 52cm width
  • 38cm depth
  • 40cm height

So let's start at the main reason as to why i’m featuring this product… its a seat box.  OK, it's not the prettiest, and it's certainly not the comfiest (believe me, when you’ve sat on a wicker basket for any length of time, a plastic one with a cushion is like memory foam mattress to your back end!), but as I said above, when your first starting to fish, just having a place to park your bum is good!

What's included in the Shakespeare beginner Seat Box?

A beginner fishing seat box wouldn't be complete with some tasty accessories.  Ok, it's not an all singing or dancing piece of equipment with every attachment under the sun included, this is a first time fishing seat box, so the extras are quite limited - but for those on a budget it's absolutely perfect!

  • Carry Strap (we'll talk about this further down)
  • Plastic Side Tray for bait and spare tackle

Not much, but for the price you really can't complain.

Included Shakespeare Carry Strap

With every budget seat box i've used - one thing sticks out like a sore thumb...the strap.  With no expense spared the strap attaches to the seat box which feels great when you don't have much tackle to carry.

💡
Save your shoulders with cheap seatbelt padded covers!

As your tackle collection grows (as it will do), and once you start carrying heavier bait (pellets / corn), the non-padded strap will start cutting into your shoulder.  This might not be much of an issue if you can park right next to your peg - however for longer walks - I would highly advise either upgrading the strap to a padded version... or as I have done - purchase some car seat belt harness pads.

Does this come with a cushion?

In short, no.  However, you can purchase a separate Shakespeare Seat Box cushion that fits on top of the budget fishing seat box.  As with most outdoor cushions, this is made from hard wearing foam that is completely waterproof.

The main downside of the aftermarket cushion is there is no way to attach it directly to the box - so in high winds you better be sitting tight or you're cushion will making its way to the next peg.

Personally, I would use some duct tape to secure the cushion, however others have found adding double sided sticky velcro to the both the box lid and cushion - allows it to be secured and removed with ease.

Would I buy the Shakespeare Fishing Box?

When my son first started fishing, he used a spare fishing chair I had.  Over time he found using a pole / whip for his daily driver.  The chair (even though it's a great chair) became more of a nuisance for him and we decided to get him a cheap fishing box.

One the reasons we were hesitant at purchasing this specific seat box was because the ponds we currently enjoy do not have level pegs - in fact in many spots, it's just a dug out bit of embankment.  As this seat box does not have any adjustable legs we felt it wasn't really going to be suitable for us.

If your local fishery has pallet / wooden / concrete pegs, then as a starter box, this would be perfect.
